First Sultan of Sarawak

<1 min reads

Earlier in the 14th Century, Datu Merpati Raden Gusti and his group of people came from Java and first stayed near Pontianak in Kalimantan Barat, Indonesia. From there they travelled via the cape named “Tanjung Datu” which is located between Sambas and Sarawak. They moved eastward to Santubong where they established their first settlement at Tanjung Sipang, Santubong. This was the destination where Sarawak Malay primarily settled down.

According to the history of Brunei, there was a strong hint that Santubong was the former capital of Sarawak in the 16th century while Pengiran Muda Tengah Ibnu Sultan Muhammad Hassan, the second son of the tenth Sultan of Brunei became the first and the last Sultan of Sarawak. Sultan Pengiran Tengah became the Sultan of Sarawak in 1599. Pengiran Tengah was known to undeniably possess bravery and great actions. Unsurprisingly, it caused apprehension and distress to Sultan`s brother. Moreover, Pengiran Tengah believed that he had equal right to become the Sultan due to the fact that he was born after his father became the Sultan, in contrast to his brother who was born before.
