5. Sarawak General Hospital
Sarawak General Hospital is the state’s and Malaysia’s largest hospital. It is East Malaysia’s primary tertiary and referral hospital. Kuching General Hospital was the name of the hospital when it was opened. Sarawak General Hospital has been serving the Sarawak community since 1870.
The hospital’s first mention is from 1910. The hospital was initially located at the current location of the Kuching Central Prison, according to this data, and 920 patients were admitted to the hospital during that year. Construction of a new hospital at the hospital’s current location on Jalan Tun Abang Haji Openg began in 1925. The new hospital opened its doors in 1931. The hospital was known as Kuching General Hospital from its inception until at least the onset of World War II.
